Snaeldan Skipstroyggjutógv 3 Ply 100g
Skipstroyggjutógv translates literally as "Ship sweater wool", and this 100% Faroese wool is the yarn that has been used traditionally for centuries to knit sweaters for fishermen and sailors. As a small, northern Atlantic island nation reliant on the sea, this wool and the sweaters associated with it are an important part of Faroese culture.
The Faroese sheep breed is double-coated, with a soft inner coat for warmth and a coarser, long-haired outer coat for weather resistance. While for the Nappað Tógv range Snaeldan use only the soft inner coat, for this yarn the whole fleece is used to make it more weather resistant. Skipstroyggjutógv has been left as untreated as possible - it is a very rustic, authentic yarn, full of character, rich in lanolin and still containing flecks of vegetable matter (easily removed when knitting). The mix of short and long-haired fleece results in a wool which may feel coarse to some knitters, but it will become softer and lighter with use, and due to the high lanolin content it is a more or less self-cleaning wool which will need little washing, just an occasional airing outside, and should last a lifetime. Designed for warmth rather than next-to-skin softness, this yarn is perfect for outer garments that will keep you warm in the coldest temperatures.
Skipstroyggjutógv is available in five undyed natural shades, and is equivalent to a heavy Aran or Bulky yarn.
